Academic Instruction

East Haddam Public Schools are committed to providing a rigorous career and college ready curriculum across all schools. East Haddam Elementary School educators and support staff focus on creating an inclusive, student-centered learning environment where all children can thrive. Teachers are encouraged to use differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, ensuring that each child receives the support and challenges they require to succeed. Collaborative learning opportunities, such as group projects and peer discussions, are emphasized to develop communication and teamwork skills. Moreover, educators strive to create a nurturing atmosphere that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a growth mindset, ensuring students feel safe, valued, and empowered to take ownership of their learning

East Haddam Elementary is committed to educating the whole child by fostering strong relationships and a sense of belonging in the classroom. The curriculum promotes social and emotional learning (SEL), helping students develop essential skills like empathy, self-regulation, and teamwork. Beyond core subjects, students enrich their educational experience with Essential Arts, which includes world language, STEM, physical education, art, music, and library programs. These subjects provide opportunities for creativity, physical activity, and the development of global citizenship. By integrating these diverse areas of learning, the school ensures that each child is not only academically prepared but also socially and emotionally supported, helping them thrive in all aspects of their lives.

East Haddam Elementary School’s PreK-3rd grade curriculum is designed to foster a strong educational foundation, ensuring that every child is supported and challenged in their academic journey. The school grounds their practices in the Science of Reading research, which emphasizes evidence-based strategies for systematic and explicit instruction  of foundational  literacy skills, supporting students as they develop into proficient readers. Bridges Mathematics is another key component of the curriculum, providing a hands-on, engaging approach to math that encourages critical thinking and problem-solving. In addition, Mystery Science is used to ignite curiosity and exploration in the field of science, offering interactive lessons that promote inquiry-based learning. The social studies curriculum is grounded in the Connecticut Social Studies Framework, ensuring students gain a well-rounded understanding of history, geography, and their role in the community.
