Principal Welcome
Dear East Haddam Elementary Families and Community,
Welcome to the East Haddam Elementary School—home to a vibrant and nurturing learning community where curiosity is encouraged, kindness is expected, and every student is known, supported, and celebrated.
I am honored to serve as the principal of EHES, where I’ve had the privilege of leading for the past six years and working in education for over two decades. With more than 20 years of experience, I remain deeply committed to creating a school environment that is engaging, inclusive, and dynamic for all learners in Pre-K through Grade 3.
At EHES, our students are at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to offer a well-rounded educational experience that supports academic growth, social-emotional development, and creative expression. Our literacy instruction is grounded in the Science of Reading, ensuring all students develop strong foundational skills in reading and writing. We also prioritize writing across genres and for various purposes, helping students grow as confident communicators and storytellers.
In mathematics, we promote critical and flexible thinking through hands-on learning, encouraging students to problem-solve, explore concepts, and apply their learning in meaningful ways. Our science curriculum is aligned with the NGSS standards, and students regularly engage in experiments and inquiry-based investigations that nurture curiosity and scientific thinking. Through the Connecticut Social Studies Frameworks, students also participate in immersive experiences that build their understanding of history, geography, civics, and culture.
We believe that education extends beyond core academics. Students enjoy rich, essential arts experiences in music, physical education, library, STEM, and art, providing creative outlets, physical growth, and opportunities to explore diverse interests. These experiences help cultivate well-rounded learners with a deep appreciation for the world around them.
As a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) school, we guide student behavior using our core expectations—SOAR: Safety, Attitude, Ownership, and Respect. These values are explicitly taught and continually reinforced throughout our school to create a safe, positive, and interconnected learning environment. Our staff uses teaching and reteaching strategies to help all students internalize these expectations and grow as responsible, respectful community members.
To support student development and a strong sense of belonging, we also incorporate restorative practices. These tools help students reflect on their actions, build empathy, repair relationships, and learn from challenges. Together, SOAR and restorative practices create a culture of accountability, compassion, and resilience.
At the core of our school is a strong belief in connection, belonging, and partnership. We deeply value collaboration with families and the broader East Haddam community. When schools and families work together, children thrive—and we are committed to building those bridges every step of the way.
Thank you for being part of the EHES family. I look forward to a continued partnership filled with joyful learning, meaningful growth, and lasting connections.
Megan Peterson,
Principal of East Haddam Elementary School
