Preschool Program and Screenings

East Haddam Elementary School
Pre-School Learning Partner Screening
Deadline March 5, 2021

The East Haddam Public Schools Preschool program is now taking applications for the September 2021 enrollment of 3 year old child mentors.

To be considered as a learning partner for the program, children must be toilet trained and exhibit age-appropriate language, behavior and play skills.  Children who will be 3 years old by September 1, 2021 will be considered for the morning program.

Preschool classes run from 8:45am - 11:45am, Monday through Thursday and follow the school district’s calendar.

Appointments for a development screening and interview will be scheduled in the spring.  To be considered for a spot as a learning partner, your child must participate in this part of the process. Eligible children will be chosen by lottery after all interviews are completed.

Parents interested in having their child screened as a preschool learning partner candidate should complete the learning partner interest form located on our website below.  If you have any questions regarding the preschool learning partner program, you can contact Denise Russo at 860-873-5076 by March 5, 2021.

Note: Parents should be aware that the East Haddam Board of Education is considering increasing Pre-K opportunities for 3 and 4 year old children. If you may be interested in participating in an expanded program, you are highly encouraged to sign up for a screening.

Preschool Program and Screenings

The East Haddam Preschool is housed at East Haddam Elementary school and offers a variety of services for children ages 3-5.  The preschool class (3 and 4 year olds) meets Monday through Thursday from 8:45 – 11:45 am.  The Pre-K (students moving to Kindergarten the following year) meets Monday through Friday from 12:25 – 3:15 pm.  Our programs are designed to service students with disabilities and their peers who serve as “learning partners”.  It is aligned with the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards, in conjunction with Creative Curriculum.  Learning partner spots are filled through a screening and lottery process conducted in the spring.

All public school systems in Connecticut are responsible for the identification of children with disabilities.  The preschool team at East Haddam Elementary School offers developmental screenings for young children currently residing in East Haddam, to ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate services and support prior to entering Kindergarten.  The screening activities are designed to assess a child’s development in the following domains: motor/adaptive, language/communication, social/emotional, and cognition.  This will help us determine whether your child would benefit from any special services in order to prepare for future school success.  During the screen, the preschool team will interact and observe each child through a variety of activities.  Following the student activities, families will receive feedback from the team.

Please call East Haddam Elementary School at 860-873-5076, to inquire further about the screening process and services.  It’s important to get connected and ask questions now if you have any concerns about your child’s development.  Common concerns include, lack of language, difficulty understanding your child’s speech, behavior, social or play skills, and/or cognitive development.  Required paperwork to identify these areas of concern must be completed before scheduling an appointment for your child.  Please complete the paperwork and return to the elementary school as soon as possible.  Developmental Screens take place on Friday mornings between 9:15 and 11:15, by appointment only.

Note: Children must be at least 3 years old to participate in the screening process.  For children younger than 3, please call Connecticut’s Birth to Three Program at 800-505-7000.
